Home Remedies for the Common Cold
Boil ½ teaspoon black pepper powder, ½ teaspoon dry ginger powder and 10 tulsi leaves in 1-cup water to make a tea. Drink this tea 2 – 3 times a day.
Add ½ teaspoon pure turmeric powder to a cup of hot milk. Drink this 2 – 3 times a day.
Boil ginger pieces in 1-cup of water. Strain and then drink.
Mix together ¼ teaspoon each of tulsi juice, ginger juice, betel leaves and honey. Take this mixture 4 times a day.
 
Further Advice:
Drink plenty of water and fruit juices.
Keep yourself warm. Avoid cold food and exposure to cold air.
Keep well rested.
Steam inhalation, warm baths and gentle massage is good.
Avoid curd, cheese and milk.
Avoid heavy, oily and mucus forming food (candies, pastries, curd, etc.).
 
Home Remedies for the Common Cough 
Take ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder (haldi) well mixed with warm milk  twice a day for 15 days.
Suck 2 pepper corns with a pinch of common salt every 4 hours.
Take a decoction of liquorice mixed with ½ teaspoon of honey twice a day.
Take 1 teaspoon of fresh tulsi juice well mixed in 10 ml. pure honey 3 times a day.
Take 1 teaspoon of fresh onion juice well mixed in 10 ml. pure honey twice a day for 10 days.
 
 Further Advice:
Since most coughs are good for the lungs as it is an elimination process, it is desirable to allow the cough to run its normal course. The above remedies or other Ayurvedic cough medicines do not suppress the cough, this helps the elimination process.
Drink plenty of fluids (water and fruit juices).
Avoid curd, cold food, cold drinks and ice-cream.
Steam inhalation of turmeric in water is beneficial.
Avoid sleep during the day.
